At Northwick Park Primary School PSHE

At primary school level sex and relationship education should contribute to the foundation of PSHE by ensuring that all children:

  • Develop confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships;
  • Are able to name parts of the body and describe how their bodies work;
  • Can protect themselves and ask for help and support; 
  • Are prepared for puberty.

There is a new scheme of work for SRE, which is due to be introduced during the coming year. Although the content of the upper school lessons has not changed very much, there are some new areas covered in Years 1 to 4. These changes are highlighted in bold.

Key Stage 1, Years 1 and 2

Through work in science children learn about life cycles of some animals, understand the idea of growing from young to old and learn that all living things reproduce.  They will learn about the parts of their body and the names for different parts – both internal and external. They learn about the importance of personal hygiene to maintain good health.  In RE and Citizenship children reflect on family relationships, different family groups and friendship.  They learn about rituals and traditions associated with birth, marriage and death and talk about the emotions involved.

They begin to co-operate with others in work and play and begin to recognise the range of human emotions and ways to deal with them.

They will begin to consider their own identity and the issues surrounding gender stereotyping.

They also learn about personal safety, both online and in the wider world.

Key Stage 2, Years 3 and 4

In lower Key Stage 2, children will continue to build upon the work done in previous

Years. They will continue to have discussions about identity and gender stereotyping, as well as the changes that take place as we grow and get older. They will think about personal space and begin to identify risks relating to keeping themselves safe, including the risks involved in online technologies. They will think about expressing their own emotions and how to manage them, as well as the relationships with family and friends. They will think about the people who can help them.

At this time, they will also be introduced to the correct medical names for male and female sexual parts.

Key Stage 2, Years 5 and 6

In year 5 and 6, the children continue to develop their ideas about relationships, considering peer pressure, trust, and how we can discuss ‘tricky’ subjects with others. They will continue to think about people who can help them in difficult situations, and will develop their understanding of online safety further. They will discuss the importance of good personal hygiene.

In year 5, the girls will have the opportunity to discuss puberty and changes that are/ will begin happening to them. They will be made aware of the people who can help them and the emotional and physical changes to be prepared for.

In year 6, boys and girls – taught in gender groups to enable children to ask questions without embarrassment- will discuss changes brought about by puberty; how babies are made and born- including assisted fertility and multiple births; assertiveness and saying no; ‘good and bad’ touch and the issue of consent and will also discuss sexual orientation and discrimination, as well as the various forms that a ‘family’ can take, and the importance of love and respect to form strong relationships.
