School life in Year 1

This term we are continuing with Read, Write, Inc, this will be a 55 minute session daily. In English we are going to look at sentence structure and including capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. In Maths we will be practising our counting skills and learning about place value. Our topic for this term is ‘All About Me’. Our Science topic is ‘Who Am I?’’

P.E is on Tuesday’s [indoor/outdoor] and Thursday’s (indoor) for 1VG and 1CK.  Please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school and that it is clearly labelled. Please ensure that earrings are not worn on P.E days and children are wearing clothes they feel confident to change out of. Long hair should also be tied back. PE kit should consist of a red or white t-shirt, black shorts, black plimsolls, jogging bottoms and a sweater for outside PE.

Just to remind you we are a healthy school and we encourage children to eat a healthy lunch. Please no fizzy drinks, chocolate bars and please remember we are a nut free school. Every child in Key Stage One is offered a piece of fruit at playtime.

Attendance We have some very exciting new attendance incentives coming soon which will be explained in an upcoming letter. We start learning in class as soon as the door opens at 8.45am. It is very important for the children to be on time to be able to settle down to their work and prepare for the day ahead.

Reading We love reading at Northwick Park and are very passionate about sharing our love of books with each other. This year we will be pairing up with a Year 6 class to visit each other’s classes regularly to share our favourite stories. Children will be improving their reading skills daily in class and are asked to read at home with an adult at least three times a week. We love to win the Readinator Bear and each week we have a key stage competition to see which class has the most amount of readers. The winner gets a visit from the Readinator Bear and we hope you can help us to win! Year 1 and Reception will also be trialling a new Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum reading scheme where children can earn a badge for how many times they have read at home. A letter will follow.

Number Bonds In Key Stage One we encourage the children to be able to learn their number bonds to 5, 10 and 20. A number bond is the pair of numbers that add together to make the total e.g. 1+4=5. Children have the opportunity to earn Number Bond certificates once they have been tested, an adult will be available every morning during registration. Once they have completed their Number Bond certificates then they can move on to Times Tables certificates.
