School life in Year 1

This term we are continuing with Read, Write, Inc, this will be a 55 minute session daily. In English we are going to look at sentence structure and including capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. In Maths we will be practising our counting skills and learning about place value. Our topic for this term is ‘All About Me’ where we will be exploring different facts about ourselves.

P.E  Indoor P.E is on Tuesday’s for 1CK and 1VG and Fridays for 1A. Outdoor P.E is on Wednesdays (all classes).  Please make sure your child has their indoor and outdoor P.E kit in school and that it is clearly labelled. Please ensure that earrings are not worn on P.E days and children are wearing clothes they feel confident to change out of. Long hair should also be tied back. PE kit should consist of a red or white t-shirt, black shorts, black plimsolls, jogging bottoms and a sweater for outside PE.

Just to remind you we are a healthy school and we encourage children to eat a healthy lunch. Please no fizzy drinks or chocolate bars and please remember we are a nut free school, this includes chocolate spreads containing nuts. Every child in Key Stage One is offered a piece of fruit at playtime and water fountains are available in all Year 1 classes.

Attendance At Northwick Park we take great pride in our attendance and  have the chance to win both weekly and monthly awards. We start learning in class as soon as the door opens at 8.45am. It is very important for the children to be on time to be able to settle down to their work and prepare for the day ahead.

Reading We love reading at Northwick Park and are very passionate about sharing our love of books with each other. This year we will be pairing up with a Year 6 class to visit each other’s classes regularly to share our favourite stories. Children will be improving their reading skills daily in class and are asked to read at home with an adult at least three times a week. We love to win the Readinator Bear and each week we have a key stage competition to see which class has the most amount of readers. The winner gets a visit from the Readinator Bear and we hope you can help us to win!

Number Bonds In Key Stage One we encourage the children to be able to learn their number bonds to 5, 10 and 20. A number bond is the pair of numbers that add together to make the total e.g. 1+4=5. Children have the opportunity to earn Number Bond certificates once they have been tested, an adult will be available every morning during registration. Once they have completed their Number Bond certificates then they can move on to Times Tables certificates.

Homework In Year 1 your child will receive a homework pack for Maths of which they can choose an activity/ies to complete and stick in their homework book each week. They will also need to learn their spellings and choose from a half termly homework menu based on their topic to complete; creative homework is celebrated in assembly at the end of each half term. Homework will be marked on Wednesdays. We offer a homework club every Thursday after school to all children. The club runs from 3.00-3.30pm in Mrs Gravely’s classroom. The children must be picked up at the Link Corridor at 3.30pm. You do not need to sign up to this club.

Spelling Scheme

We are continuing with our current spelling scheme this year. The majority of children in Year 1 will have the same spellings. Your child may find some weeks easier than others! They will receive new set of spellings every week and be tested every Friday. Children will receive a reward for trying to practise them at home.

Trips

As a key stage, at present we are organising a fun trip to the pantomime in December. After the success last year we are revisiting the Towngate Theatre. Details to follow soon. Later in the school year we are planning a visit to Barleyland’s Farm to enrich the children’s learning about one of our topic’s, Minibeasts. We are also looking forward to welcoming visitors to school who will include Florence Nightingale.

Children’s University

We continue to offer a variety of clubs so children can collect their University hours. If your child does not have a passport speak to your child’s teacher and they will arrange one for you.

We are really looking forward to working with you and your children this year. We are happy to discuss any concerns/queries with you after we have safely released all of the children in our care or feel free to write a note. Many Thanks Mrs Kelly, Mrs Cooper, Miss Gardner and Miss Andrews.
