Year 1 2019-20
Happy new Year! The teachers this year are Miss Gardner (1VG), Miss Andrews (1A) and Miss Dickinson (1D).The Learning Support Assistants working with us are Mrs S Clarke, Mrs Payne, Mrs Onslow, Miss Kemp, Mrs Church, Mrs Mussett, Mrs Lockwood and Mrs Shuttlewood.
Indoor PE is on Tuesdays for 1D and 1A and Fridays for 1VG. Outdoor PE is on Wednesdays (all classes). Please make sure your child has their indoor and outdoor PE kit in school and that it is clearly labelled. Please ensure that earrings are not worn on PE days and children are wearing clothes they feel confident to change out of. Long hair should also be tied back. PE kit should consist of a red or white t-shirt, black shorts, black plimsolls, and jogging bottoms and a sweater for outside PE as it is getting colder.
Just to remind you we are a healthy school and we encourage children to eat a healthy lunch. Please no fizzy drinks or chocolate bars and please remember we are a nut free school, this includes chocolate spreads containing nuts. Every child in Key Stage One is offered a piece of fruit at playtime and water fountains are available in all Year 1 classes.
At Northwick Park we take great pride in our attendance and have the chance to win both weekly and monthly awards. We start learning in class as soon as the door opens at 8.45am. It is very important for the children to be on time to be able to settle down to their work and prepare for the day ahead.
We love reading at Northwick Park and are very passionate about sharing our love of books with each other. This year we will be pairing up with another year group to visit each other’s classes regularly to share our favourite stories. Children will be improving their reading skills daily in class and are asked to read at home with an adult at least three times a week. We love to win the Readinator Bear and each week we have a key stage competition to see which class has the most amount of readers. The winner gets a visit from the Readinator Bear and we hope you can help us to win! Children also have the chance to win a Bronze, Silver and Gold reading award, this will be given out termly if they read three times a week for every week of the term.
In Key Stage One we encourage the children to be able to learn their number bonds to 5, 10 and 20. A number bond is the pair of numbers that add together to make the total e.g. 1+4=5. Children have the opportunity to earn Number Bond certificates once they have been tested, an adult will be available every morning during registration. Once they have completed their Number Bond certificates then they can move on to Times Tables certificates.
In Year 1 your child will receive a homework list for Maths of which they can choose an activity/ies to complete in their homework book each week. They will also need to learn their spellings and choose from a termly homework menu based on their topic to complete; creative homework is celebrated in assembly at the end of each term.
Children will receive new set of spellings every week and be tested every Thursday. Children will receive a reward for trying to practise them at home. Remember to practise using Spelling Shed! (Should there be any issues with spelling shed, please speak to a class teacher).
Later in the school year we are planning a visit to Mountfitchet Castle to enrich the children’s learning about one of our topics, ‘Castles’. We are also looking forward to experiencing a bus tour of Canvey Island!
We continue to offer a variety of clubs so children can collect their University hours. If your child does not have a passport speak to your child’s teacher and they will arrange one for you.
We are really looking forward to working with you and your children this year. We are happy to discuss any concerns/queries with you after we have safely released all of the children in our care or feel free to write a note. Many Thanks Miss Gardner, Miss Dickinson and Miss Andrews.
