Year 2 2018-19
Welcome to a new school year.
The teachers this year are Mrs Gravely and Mrs Abbott (2GA) and Mrs Young (2Y).
The Learning Support Assistants working with us are Mrs Smitheman, Mrs Dawkins, Mrs Lockwood, Miss Johnson and Mrs Penny.
Our topic for this term is London. We will be learning about the Royal Family and famous London landmarks. We will be recreating artwork by Banksy. Towards the end of the half term we will be having a big box day so please can you send in any large boxes as well as cereal boxes. Look out for your invitation to visit our London.
In English we are going to look at sentence structures and the presentation of our handwriting. We will also be writing non-chronological reports, linking to our London topic. In Maths we will be practising our counting skills and learning about place value. Our Science topic is materials.
We are all passionate and enthusiastic about reading and hope that the children are too. Please let us know if there are any particular authors, books or magazines that your child enjoys. This half term we will be reading the works of Julia Donaldson. Please support your child by reading together at home and remembering to write in their diaries so they can receive their reading rewards. We will be promoting our lunchtime reading club to help children to achieve their three weekly reads.
Maths homework is due in on Friday and books will be returned on the following Monday. Any homework not in on time will not be marked.
We also ask you to practise spellings at home and read with your child at least 3x a week. Please ensure you comment in the reading diaries. It is very important that your child brings their reading folder every day.
We will be continuing with our spelling scheme this year. The majority of children in Year 2 will have the same spellings. Your child may find some weeks easier than others!
To support the children further with their homework we offer a homework club every Thursday after school.
The club runs from 3.00-3.30pm in Mrs Gravely’s classroom. The children must be picked up at the Link Corridor at 3.30pm. You do not need to sign up to this club.
We have lots of exciting trips planned for the year and will let you know more details closer to the time.
Our first trip of the year will be to St. Nicholas’ church to recognise the features of a church and understand what a special place it is.
We will also be re-visiting the church to celebrate Christmas with a Christingle service.
As a key stage, at present we are organising a fun trip to the pantomime in December. After the success last year we are revisiting the Towngate Theatre. Details to follow soon.
In the Summer term we are planning on visiting Boydell’s Farm to appreciate where our food comes from.
The children will participate in Forest School sessions on Wednesdays. Dates will be displayed on the window in the Link Corridor. The children will need to bring in old clothes and wellies as they will be out in all weathers.
P.E is on Tuesdays (outside) and Thursdays (inside). Please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school at all times and that it is clearly labelled. Please ensure that earrings are not worn on P.E days. Long hair must also be tied back. PE kit should consist of a red or white t-shirt, black shorts, plimsolls/trainers and jogging bottoms and a sweater for outside PE. We will also be ‘walking a mile’ on Friday afternoons.
Just to remind you we are a healthy school and we encourage children to eat a healthy lunch. Please no fizzy drinks or chocolate bars. Every child in Key Stage One is offered a piece of fruit at playtime.
It is really important that your child attends school every day. Please ensure that you arrive with plenty of time in the morning. Our doors close at 8.55am. After this time children will need to come through the office to be marked in.
We continue to offer a variety of clubs so children can collect their University hours. A club list will be coming out soon so children can sign up.
We are really looking forward to working with you all this year. Please feel free to speak to us at the door in the morning or after school if you have any questions.
