Year 2 2019-20

Welcome back to Spring term.

The teachers this year are Mrs Gravely (2G) and Mrs Wright/Mrs Abbott (2WA) and Mr Long (2L). The Learning Support Assistants working with us are Mrs Williams, Mrs Miller, Mrs Penny, Mrs Smitherman and Mrs Onslow.

Our topic for this term is Australia. We will be learning about Australian animals and famous Australian landmarks. We will be using atlases and globes to locate the continents and oceans. At the end of the month we will be celebrating Australia Day and you will be invited in at the end of the day to watch some Australian dancing. In English we are going to look at improving our sentences and joining handwriting. We will be writing letters and stories linking to our Australian topic. In Maths we will be learning about multiplication, division and shapes. Our Science topic is Animals including humans.

We are all passionate and enthusiastic about reading and know that the children are too. Please let us know if there are any particular authors, books or magazines that your child enjoys. This half term we will be exposing the children to the books written by David Walliams. Please support your child by reading together at home so they can receive their reading rewards. We will be promoting our lunchtime reading club to help children to achieve their three weekly reads.

Maths homework is due in on Monday and folders will be returned on the following Thursday. Any homework not in on time will not be marked.

We also ask you to practise spellings at home and read with your child at least 3x a week. Please ensure you comment in the reading diaries. It is very important that your child brings their reading folder every day.

Spelling Scheme

We will be continuing with our spelling scheme this year. Each English set will have their own spellings. Your child may find some weeks easier than others! The teachers will ensure the weekly spellings are on Spelling Shed. Please ask if your child has lost their log in.

Creative Homework

We have really enjoyed celebrating the children’s creative homework in Autumn term and will look forward to seeing their amazing creations in Spring term. We will be displaying the homework from across the school so everyone can appreciate the efforts made.

Year 2 WOW Moments!

Australia Day celebration

A surprise parcel arriving with a Koala!

A visit to Space

We have lots of exciting trips planned for the year and will let you know more details closer to the time.

Australia Day

We will be celebrating Australia Day in school on Friday 24th January. We will be dressing up in red, white and blue clothes. The children will experience a variety of art based activities and learn some Australian songs and dances for you to come and see.

Boydells Farm

In the Summer term we have booked our trip to Boydell’s Farm to appreciate where our food comes from. We are going on Wednesday 29th April. It is a fantastic opportunity for children to see a working farm and have ‘hands on’ experience with a variety of animals.

Forest School The children will participate in Forest School sessions on Tuesdays. Dates will be displayed on the window in the Link Corridor. The children will need to bring in old clothes and wellies as they will be out in all weathers.

P.E is on Mondays (outside) and Wednesdays or Fridays (inside). Please make sure your child has their P.E kit in school at all times and that it is clearly labelled. Please ensure that earrings are not worn on P.E days. Long hair must also be tied back. PE kit should consist of a red or white t-shirt, black shorts, plimsolls/trainers and jogging bottoms and a sweater for outside PE.

Just to remind you we are a healthy school and we encourage children to eat a healthy lunch. Please no fizzy drinks or chocolate bars. Every child in Key Stage One is offered a piece of fruit at playtime.

It is really important that your child attends school every day. Please ensure that you arrive with plenty of time in the morning. Our doors close at 8.55am. After this time children will need to come through the office to be marked in and unfortunately receive a late mark.

Children’s University

We continue to offer a variety of clubs so children can collect their University hours. A club list will be coming out soon for Spring 2 so children can sign up.

We are really looking forward to continuing to work with you all this year. Please feel free to speak to us at the door in the morning or after school if you have any questions.
