Year 3 2019-20
Welcome to Spring Term 2020.
The teachers this year are Miss Graham (3G), Miss Cramer and Mrs Whiston (3Y). Mrs Hughes and Mrs Ridley are teaching Maths and English sets.
The Learning Support Assistants working with us are Mrs Clare, Mrs Pettitt, Mr Morgan and Mrs Caldeira.
We have had a fantastic start to Year 3. Our first topic, which the children loved, was all about Extreme Earth. Our trip to the Natural History Museum was a great hit and we loved taking part in the earthquakes and volcanoes session. We also received a letter from a toy maker who needed our help in designing toys for children around the world. The children had to create a design and a prototype to send to him. We also got to conduct a variety of experiments in our Science lessons. A particular highlight of the Autumn term was performing Christmas songs during the Canvey Light switch on and showing what we had learned on the recorder.
We are all passionate and enthusiastic about reading and know that the children are too. Please let us know if there are any particular authors, books or magazines that your child enjoys. Please support your child by reading together at home and remembering to write in their diaries so they can receive their reading rewards. We will be promoting our lunchtime reading club to help children to achieve their three weekly reads. Our Reading Café will be held on Thursday 30th January. Come along for reading and cake.
A Maths homework letter, with new targets, will be sent home shortly. There will be sheets available in your child’s class to practise any key skills. Books need to handed in on a regular basis for your child’s teacher to mark and reward homework completed.
Creative homework will be handed out on the 20th January 2020 and due in on the 20th March 2020. We will only be setting one piece of creative homework this term and will celebrate any homework along with the whole school.
To support the children further with their homework, we offer a homework club every Tuesday after school.
The club runs from 3.00-3.30pm with Mrs Pettitt. The children must be picked up at the Link Corridor at 3.30pm, or if they are attending Busy Bears staff will take them over.
We will be continuing with our spelling scheme this year. The majority of children in Year 3 will have the same spellings. Your child may find some weeks easier than others! They can practise either in their spelling books or on Spelling Shed.
Year 3 WOW Moments!
School trip to Hadleigh Roundhouse!
Healthy Food Tasting!
During the Spring half term, the children learn about the Stone age through to the Iron age. Therefore, we have booked an exciting trip to the Hadleigh Roundhouse on Thursday 26th March 2020. The children will go on an archaeological dig, make clay pots and visit a roundhouse to understand how they lived. They will also look at Iron Age weapons and armour.
Year 3’s forest school sessions run for 5 consecutive weeks every Wednesday. Children need to have a kit containing old, warm clothes and wellington boots. As a school we provide waterproofs but they can wear their own.
This term in PE we will be taking part in ‘circuits’ and tennis. These will involve learning all about health & fitness and persevering through difficult tasks. Our PE days are on a Tuesday and a Friday. Please ensure your child has suitable footwear (preferably trainers), has any earrings removed and has long hair tied back.
Keeping children safe online is of great importance to us therefore will be holding e-safety meetings this year for parents on the 12th February 2020.
Also, our annual pancake tossing event will be held on the 25th February 2020. Please come along and support us by sponsoring your child on how many times they can flip a pancake.
This year we will be celebrating World Book Day on the 5th March 2020. Children can come in dressed up as their favourite character from a book.
We will also be raising money for Sports Relief on the 13th March 2020.
School trousers must be black school trousers and children are not allowed to wear jeans. Leggings are not to be worn without a skirt. For health and safety reasons, all long hair needs to be tied back.
Key Stage 2 clubs will start the week beginning the 20th March. Letters for the exciting clubs that we offer will be handed out soon. Children who attend these clubs can collect University hours to go towards their graduation. If your child would like a passport and does not have one, please speak to your child’s teacher for them to organise one for you.
It is really important that your child attends school every day. Please ensure that you arrive with plenty of time in the morning. Our doors close at 8.55am. After this time children will need to come through the office to be marked in and unfortunately receive a late mark.
We have really enjoyed working with you all this year and appreciate your support and co-operation. Please feel free to speak to us at the door after school if you have any questions.
