Year 4 2018-19

Welcome to Year 4

Class teachers in Year 4 this year are Mrs Corbyn and Mrs Carroll. Mrs Pye-Mingard and Mrs Stevenson will be teaching a Maths set and an English set. The Learning Support Assistants working with us are Mrs Watts, Mrs Shepherd, Mrs Pettitt and Mrs Heuer.

We have lots of exciting topics in year 4.

In the Autumn term we will be developing our understanding of the world, focusing on Brazil and the rainforest. In Science we will be learning about Sound and States of Matter. In English, we will be creating stories based on our knowledge of the Brazilian culture. We will also be looking at plays and performance. In Maths, we will be working on place value and the four operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

In the Spring term, we will be learning about the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons, thinking about their traditions and how they are different to people today.

As part of our Romans topic, in the Spring term we will be visiting Colchester Castle in January. A letter with dates and more information on this will follow.

Children have the opportunity to complete Maths homework in their Maths homework book and this will be due in on a Wednesday.

Creative homework is given every half term; we hope that this will be very enjoyable! It is based on the topics we are looking at and provides a chance for children to research aspects of the topics in more detail. A letter about homework will follow.

Spellings are completed on a weekly basis. They are handed out on Mondays and the children will be tested on the following Monday. Children will be provided with a spelling book to practise their spellings at home.

At this age it is very important that children read regularly at home. Children are expected to read at least three times a week to an adult at home. If your child has read three times at home during the week they will receive team points and have the opportunity to win a prize in our reading raffle. There are various other rewards the children will receive for their hard work.

Lunchtime reading

It is expected that the children read three times a week at home. We understand that on occasions this can be difficult - therefore at lunchtime there are opportunities to read with a member of staff which will then count towards the weekly reading target of 3.

This year, the children will have the opportunity to take part in 10 swimming lessons at Waterside Farm Sports Centre. These will commence after the Christmas holidays. A letter will be sent out nearer the time detailing what the children will need to wear and dates.

In Key Stage 2, the children are welcome to bring a healthy snack to eat during their break time or they can purchase a snack from the tuck trolley - prices from 10p. Children should not be bringing in more than 50p for tuck.

Children should be wearing red polo shirts, black trousers or skirts and black footwear.

In order for every child to reach their full potential it is vital that they are in school every day. This year, we will be rewarding outstanding attendance and children will be entered into a raffle to win one of our fabulous prizes. There is also an attendance award for the class with the best attendance for the half term. If for any reason your child is not able to attend school you must contact the school’s Attendance Officer, Mrs Hull, as soon as possible

Year 4 will be having outdoor PE lessons on Monday afternoons and indoor PE lessons on Tuesday afternoons. Please ensure your child has a clearly labelled P.E. kit in school at all times. The kit should include: a red or white t-shirt, black shorts, plimsolls or trainers, jogging bottoms and a warm top. Please ensure that earrings are not worn on P.E. days, as jewellery cannot be worn during PE lessons. Long hair needs to be tied back.

Children’s University – Clubs

Over the years, many children have graduated from Children’s University by gaining hours for attending a variety of extra-curricular clubs. This can take the form of a school club or a recognised club outside of school. We have many clubs to offer at school which change half termly and allow children to learn new and exciting things. We hope this year that many more children take advantage of the opportunity to take part in this fabulous initiative.

Reading Café

Following on from the success of previous years’ Reading Café sessions, where parents and carers were invited into school to read with their children, we will continue this activity this year. The dates for this are currently being finalised and will be sent out in a letter. We very much look forward to seeing lots of you enjoying reading with the children at these events.

As locker space is limited, please ensure your child only has a drawstring P.E. bag and book bag in school. Your child does not need a pencil case or any other equipment.

Exciting home learning resources!

As a school, we are encouraging children to improve their spelling through the use of Spelling Shed and their times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars. These are available free online and letters with your child’s login will be sent home soon.

Homework Club

This club runs every Thursday and Friday after school from 3.00-3.30pm for Year 3 and 4. The children go straight to the club after school and are picked up from the office. Busy Bears children will be collected at 3:30pm.
