Year 4 2019-20

Class teachers in Year 4 this year are Mrs Corbyn, Miss Leader and Miss Mattey. Mrs John and Mrs Hyde will be teaching a maths set and Mrs Clark and Mrs Hyde will be teaching an English set. The Learning Support Assistants working with us are Mrs Annison, Mrs Heuer, Mrs Conroy and Mrs Armstrong. We’re also lucky enough to have two trainee teachers working within our year group next year.

We have lots of exciting topics in year 4.

In the Autumn term we will be developing our understanding of the world, focusing on Brazil and the rainforest. At the end of the topic we will be celebrating our learning by having our own Brazilian carnival. In Science we will be learning about Sound and States of Matter. In English, we will be creating stories based on our knowledge of the Brazilian culture. We will also be looking at plays and performance. In Maths, we will be working on place value and the four operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

In the Spring term, we will be learning about the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons, thinking about their traditions and how they are different to people today.

Trips

In January, year 4 get the chance to step back in time and visit Colchester Castle to experience life in Roman Britain. The teachers are excited about this adventure and we are sure the children will be too. A letter with dates and more information on this will follow.

Swimming

After Christmas, the children will have the opportunity to take part in 10 swimming lessons at Waterside Farm Sports Centre. A letter will be sent out nearer the time detailing what the children will need to wear and dates.

Homework

The children will receive an overview of the objectives they will be covering in maths in order for them to continue their learning at home.

Creative homework is given every half term; we hope that this will be very enjoyable! It is based on the topics we are looking at and provides a chance for children to research aspects of the topics in more detail.

Spellings

Spellings are completed on a weekly basis. They are handed out on Mondays and the children will be tested on the following Monday. Children will be provided with a spelling book to practise their spellings at home. They can also practise their spellings using Spelling Shed.

Reading

At this age it is very important that children read regularly at home. Children are expected to read at least three times a week to an adult at home. If your child has read three times at home during the week they will receive team points and have the opportunity to reading party with their class. There are various other rewards the children will receive for their hard work.

Lunchtime reading

It is expected that the children read three times a week at home. We understand that on occasions this can be difficult - therefore at lunchtime there are opportunities to read with a member of staff which will then count towards the weekly reading target.

Homework Club

This club runs every Friday after school from 3.00-3.30pm for Year  4. The children go straight to the club after school and are picked up from the office. Busy Bears children will be collected at 3:30pm.

Children’s University – Clubs

Over the years, many children have graduated from Children’s University by gaining hours for attending a variety of extra-curricular clubs. This can take the form of a school club or a recognised club outside of school. We have many clubs to offer at school which change half termly and allow children to learn new and exciting things. We hope this year that many more children take advantage of the opportunity to take part in this fabulous initiative.

Attendance

In order for every child to reach their full potential it is vital that they are in school every day. There is an attendance award for the class with the best attendance for the month. If for any reason your child is not able to attend school you must contact the school’s Attendance Officer, Mrs Hull, as soon as possible.

Exciting home learning resources!

As a school, we are encouraging children to improve their spelling through the use of Spelling Shed and their times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars. These are available free online and letters with your child’s login will be sent home soon.

Lockers

As locker space is limited, please ensure your child only has a drawstring P.E. bag and book bag in school. Your child does not need a pencil case or any other equipment.
